in late spring 2001 we did a trip through mexico - by car, to be indepedent and to see as many ruins as possible in three weeks. we started in mexico city, made our way south to oaxaca, then east to the coast to vera cruz and villa hermosa. next stop was chiapas and palenque. last on the list was yucatan with uxmal and chichén itzá. on to the pages: - teotihuacán - the ruins near mexico city. built before the aztecs arrived. unknown origin. - monte albán - built by the zapotecs. the last change was ~900 AC. - palenque - built by the maya. they lived there from ~600 to ~900 AC and then left the area for an unknown reason. the ruins were lost and found several times. - uxmal - one of the biggest maya ruins, built in their late classic period. - chichén itzá - the maya lived there from 400 to 1000 AC, then the toltecs invaded the area and the architecture is a result of the mixed culture. - tulum - the one and only mayan ruin at the coast, built after 100 AC. - misc - includes the ruins of cholula, olmecs and tlatelolco. - iguanas - we have so many pictures of them and they are just soo cool... if not marked otherwise, the pictures were taken by Rainer Feistel. please ask for permission before you use them elsewhere. thanks, ern. ps: one more note on the pictures - if you download them, their file names are significant: "mex"+yyyy+mm+dd+"place". |
